It would always be difficult to compete against Nations like Germany & Switzerland who have a 3 month Indoor League season which was very clear to see from their patterns of play and player-undersatndings – these 2 Nations led the group by some margin and although the group game was a closely fought encounter, the final was won by a very comfortable margin with Germany the deserved victors and Gold Madalists.
However, with Rod Naughalty as Captain, England Over 50’s won all 5 of their Group games – sorry, the other 5! (losing to Germany & Switzerland) leading to a rematch of the narrow 3-2 win over Australia to play off for Bronze.
With a great start to the Medal Match, England dominated the first 10 minutes, but failed to score. Australia then took control as substitutions could not match the initial game tempo and England found themselves 2 down, but pulled 1 back just before half time.
A fast start to the 2nd half, and Australia extended their lead, 3-1, 4-1, even 5-1
With grit & determination, and still plenty of time to go, England made the brave move to take off the keeper and pressed the Aussies hard with the extra outfield player, Rod Naughalty then playing as kicking Back. One goal was pulled back and sustained pressure should have led to others as opportunities were missed. As the final whistle blew one last chance was left as a Penatly Corner was awarded, but again the chance was squandered and the final score remained 2-5 and England were left 4th and no medal this time.
We Need More Indoor Hockey in the UK! It’s such a great game!!
